Living completely independent from the red eléctrica with paneles solares and a batería doméstica. What do you need, what does it cost and for whom is it truly feasible?
Living completely independent from the energy grid is an attractive thought. No factura energética, no congestión de la red, no dependence on energy companies. But is it also realistic? For most homeowners in los Países Bajos, a fully fuera de la red setup is a significant challenge — but not impossible. The technology has made enormous strides in recent years.
In this article, we honestly examine what you need, what it costs, and for whom fuera de la red living is truly feasible in the Dutch context.
A fully fuera de la red system in los Países Bajos requires considerably more capacity than an average on-grid sistema de batería doméstica. The four core components are:
A working fuera de la red system consists at minimum of:
The biggest obstacle for fuera de la red living in los Países Bajos is winter. In December and January, the average solar production on a 10 kWp installation is just 3–8 kWh por día. If your hogar consumes 15–20 kWh por día, you have an acute shortfall. A large battery bank bridges this for a few days, but after a week of overcast weather you will be depleted without a backup.

The costs for a fully fuera de la red system are considerably higher than for an on-grid sistema de batería doméstica. Below is an indicative overview:
| Situación | Required system | Indicative costs |
|---|---|---|
| Small hogar (2 pers.) | 10 kWp + 30 kWh battery | €25,000 – €40,000 |
| Family (4 pers.) | 15 kWp + 45 kWh battery + generator | €40,000 – €65,000 |
| Outbuilding / holiday home | 5 kWp + 15 kWh battery | €15,000 – €25,000 |
Fuera de la red is most realistic for:
For most Dutch hogares, "near fuera de la red" is more realistic and financially far more attractive. You stay connected to the grid but use it only as an ultimate backup — a few percent of your total consumption. This requires a system of 15–25 kWp paneles solares with 15–30 kWh capacidad de la batería.
A near-fuera de la red setup offers 95%+ energy independence at a fraction of the cost of a fully fuera de la red system. You pay a minimal grid connection fee (€15–20/month standing charge) but draw virtually all energy from your own installation. Subvenciones and IVA benefits also apply.
If you want to achieve maximum energy independence without taking the full fuera de la red leap, we recommend: 15–20 kWp paneles solares, 15–20 kWh capacidad de la batería, a hybrid inversor with EPS function, and a smart gestión energética system that automatically optimises your consumption.
Living fully fuera de la red is technically feasible in los Países Bajos, but requires a considerable investment and adjustment of consumption patterns. For most hogares, near fuera de la red is the wiser choice: maximum independence at affordable costs, while retaining grid security as the ultimate backup.
