What is more cost-effective: alquilar or buying a batería doméstica? We compare monthly costs, total costs over 10 and 15 years, and give our honest advice.
The batería doméstica market is growing rapidly and an increasing number of companies offer alquiler schemes. It sounds appealing: no high upfront costs, monthly instalments and sometimes including installation and mantenimiento. But is alquilar actually more cost-effective? Or do you end up paying more in the long run than if you buy outright?
In this article, we compare both options honestly and transparently. We calculate with current 2026 prices, look at total costs over 10 and 15 years, and help you determine which option best suits your situation.
With a alquiler scheme, you pay a fixed monthly fee (typically between €50 and €120) for the use of a batería doméstica. The battery remains the property of the alquiler company. Most alquiler contracts have a term of 10 to 15 years. What is typically included?
Let us put the figures in order for a popular 5 kWh batería doméstica (comparable to the Anker SOLIX Solarbank 2 Pro):
| Cost item | Alquilar (10 years) | Buying |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | €0 | €1,299 |
| Installation | Included | €0 (plug & play) |
| Monthly costs | €75/month | €0 |
| Total after 10 years | €9,000 | €1,299 |
The difference is substantial: over 10 years, alquilar costs nearly 7x more than buying. And after those 10 years, with alquilar you still do not own the battery. With a purchase, after the payback period (4-6 years) you have pure profit.

Despite the higher total costs, there are situations in which alquilar can be a sensible choice:
If you cannot pay the purchase amount in one go and do not want to take out a loan, alquilar offers a low-threshold entry point. You start saving immediately and pay in instalments. Note, however: the total costs are higher.
Are you planning to move within 3-5 years? Then alquilar can be more flexible. With some contracts, you can take the battery with you or transfer the contract. With a purchased fixed system, relocation is more difficult (and sometimes not possible).
For most homeowners, buying is the better option. These are the key reasons:
At Home Energy Solutions, we almost always advise buying. The reason is simple: the savings are greater, you own the battery, and current battery prices are so competitive that the payback period is shorter than ever.
Our recommendation:
Buy a batería doméstica if you can. The payback period is 4-6 years, after which you save for 15+ years. With a budget of €1,300-€3,000, you already have an excellent system. Alquilar costs you €7,000-€9,000 more over 10 years.
Alquilar offers a low-threshold entry point, but is significantly more expensive in the long run. Buying is the smartest choice for most hogares: lower total costs, ownership, and a faster payback period. With the competitive battery prices of 2026 and the plug-and-play installation of brands such as Anker SOLIX, the barrier to buying is lower than ever.
