An in-depth comparison of LiFePO4 (LFP) and NMC battery chemistry. Discover the differences in safety, vida útil, cost and winter performance.
The two dominant battery chemistries in the batería doméstica market are LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate, or LiFePO4) and NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt). Both are lithium-ion batteries, but the composition of the cathode differs fundamentally. This difference determines how safe, durable, heavy and expensive your batería doméstica is.
LFP has become the standard for baterías domésticas in 2026. Brands such as Anker SOLIX, BYD, Pylontech and Dyness use almost exclusively LFP cells. NMC is still found in some older models and in specific applications where densidad energética is crucial, such as vehículo eléctricos. But even there LFP is gaining ground — the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range already uses LFP, for example.
Safety is the biggest difference between LFP and NMC, and the main reason why LFP has become the standard for home storage. LFP cells are thermally much more stable than NMC cells. Thermal runaway in LFP only occurs above 270°C, while in NMC this can happen at around 210°C. In practice, this means an LFP battery virtually cannot spontaneously catch fire.
The vida útil of a battery is expressed in charge ciclos — the number of times you can fully carga y descarga the battery before the capacity noticeably decreases. Here LFP wins by a large margin:

In the table below we compare LFP and NMC on the most important criteria for baterías domésticas:
| Property | LFP (LiFePO4) | NMC |
|---|---|---|
| Safety | Very high (thermal runaway >270°C) | High (thermal runaway ~210°C) |
| Vida útil (ciclos) | 6,000-10,000 | 2,000-4,000 |
| Vida útil (years) | 15-25 years | 6-12 years |
| Densidad energética | ~160 Wh/kg | ~220 Wh/kg |
| Weight (10 kWh) | 100-120 kg | 70-90 kg |
| Winter performance (-10°C) | -25 to -30% capacity | -15 to -20% capacity |
| Price per kWh | €150-300 | €200-350 |
As you can see, LFP wins on most criteria that are relevant for home use. NMC only scores better on densidad energética (and therefore weight) and cold-weather performance. For most hogares, LFP is the logical choice.
At temperatures below freezing, NMC performs slightly better than LFP. LFP cells lose up to 30% of their capacity at -10°C, while NMC cells only lose 15-20% at the same temperature. This is because the lithium ions in LFP cells move more slowly through the crystal structure in cold conditions.
In practice, this is rarely an issue for Dutch hogares. Most baterías domésticas are installed indoors, where the temperature seldom drops below 5°C. Moreover, modern LFP batteries have a built-in heating element that keeps the cells at the right temperature. Anker SOLIX and BYD models, for example, have a winter mode that activates automatically in cold weather. If you place the battery in an unheated garaje or shed, indoor placement or insulation is recommended — regardless of the battery type.
In terms of purchase price per kWh, LFP and NMC are now close together. LFP was historically cheaper, and that gap has actually widened rather than narrowed in 2026 as production has scaled up. Expect the following indicative prices:
LFP baterías domésticas are on average 20-30% heavier than NMC equivalents with the same capacity. A 10 kWh LFP system typically weighs 100-120 kg, while an NMC system with the same capacity weighs 70-90 kg. This is because LFP has a lower densidad energética: you need more material to store the same amount of energy.
For most installations this difference is not decisive — the battery sits on a floor or hangs on a wall. But for wall mounting or installation on an upper floor, the weight can be relevant. Always check the load-bearing capacity of the wall or floor with your installer.
For baterías domésticas in 2026, LFP is the clear winner. The combination of superior safety, longer vida útil (6,000-10,000 ciclos), lower cost per kWh and more environmentally friendly production (no cobalt) makes it the standard. Only if you have extremely limited space or place the battery outdoors at freezing temperatures without insulation does NMC offer a marginal advantage.
