Wind energy is a growing source of cheap, green electricity. Discover how to connect your home battery to wind energy via dynamic tariffs or a wind share in your contract.
The Netherlands now has more than 6,000 onshore and offshore wind turbines, together accounting for over 20% of electricity generation. During high winds, the grid produces far more electricity than it consumes — leading to negative or extremely low electricity prices. A home battery can charge at precisely those moments: green electricity, minimal costs.
The combination of wind energy and a home battery is particularly attractive in autumn and winter, when solar panels produce less but there is more wind. During that period, you partially compensate for the lower solar yield by storing cheap wind power.
Wind energy cannot be received directly at home like solar power, but you can benefit optimally from it indirectly via two routes:
With a dynamic energy contract (e.g. Tibber, ANWB Energie, Zonneplan Dynamic), you pay a different price each hour based on the current market price (EPEX spot market). When winds are strong and plenty of wind power is available, the market price sometimes drops to virtually zero — or even negative. At those moments, you charge your battery for practically nothing.

Some suppliers offer contracts where you purchase a percentage of wind power, regardless of the dynamic tariff. This guarantees that your electricity largely comes from wind farms, but offers less financial benefit than a fully dynamic contract.
Wind power is cheapest under the following circumstances:
Below, we compare three dynamic suppliers on relevant features for battery owners:
| Supplier | Contract type | Automatic charging at lowest tariff |
|---|---|---|
| Tibber | Fully dynamic (hourly price) | Yes, via Tibber Pulse + partner app |
| ANWB Energie Dynamic | Dynamic (daily or hourly price) | Partially via EMS connection |
| Zonneplan Dynamic | Fully dynamic (hourly price) | Yes, via API connection |
The prices shown are averages — during high wind production, tariffs sometimes drop to 0 or negative. During negative prices, you are effectively paid to use electricity.
Maximise your benefit from wind power charging:
Wind and sun complement each other perfectly: sun dominates in summer, wind in autumn and winter. With a home battery that responds automatically to low wind tariffs via smart controllers, you effectively have an all-season savings system.
