Firmware updates improve the safety, performance, and lifespan of your home battery. Discover what firmware does, how updates work, and when you should install them.
Firmware is the software embedded in the hardware components of your home battery: the Battery Management System (BMS), the inverter, the gateway, and any communication modules. This software determines how the battery charges, discharges, communicates, and protects itself against overload.
Just like the software on your smartphone or laptop, firmware requires regular updates to fix bugs, improve performance, and patch security vulnerabilities. Home battery manufacturers release an average of 2–6 updates per year, depending on the brand and product line.
Firmware updates address five categories:

| Brand | Update frequency | Update method |
|---|---|---|
| Anker SOLIX | Monthly | Automatic via app (OTA) |
| Huawei LUNA | Quarterly | Automatic via FusionSolar |
| Dyness | Biannually | Manual via USB or installer |
| BYD HVS | Quarterly | Via installer or app |
Most modern home batteries support automatic updates via WiFi. Sometimes a small performance improvement is even visible in the monitoring app: you'll notice the system has become more efficient without having to do anything.
The installation method varies by brand:
Most systems are connected to WiFi and automatically check for available updates. Updates are typically performed overnight, outside peak hours. You don't need to do anything. Just ensure the WiFi connection is stable and the gateway is switched on.
For systems without a WiFi connection or for manufacturers that don't support automatic OTA (over-the-air) updates, you download the firmware from the manufacturer's website and connect a USB drive to the gateway or system. Always follow the exact instructions in the manual.
Keep the following in mind with firmware updates:
A home battery is an investment that should last 15–25 years. Firmware updates are the key to keeping that investment performing optimally. They are free, largely automatic, and ensure your system always performs at its best — safer, more efficient, and more compatible with new features.
